Ascension Health was founded in 1999 through the union of the Sisters of St. Joseph Health System and the Daughters of Charity National Health System. In 2002, the Carondelet Health System was welcomed into Ascension Health. Upon creation of the Congregation of St. Joseph in 2007, the new combined congregation assumed sponsorship of Ascension Health.

Ascension Health formed a parent organization called Ascension in 2012. In addition to healthcare delivery, Ascension subsidiaries provide a variety of services and solutions including physician practice management, venture capital investing, investment management, biomedical engineering, clinical care management, information services, risk management, and contracting through Ascension’s own group purchasing organization. Ascension grew in 2012 with the addition of the Alexian Brothers Health System, and in 2013 with the addition of the health ministries of the former Marian Health System.

In 2010, Ascension Health’s sponsors recognized Ascension Health as a ministry of the Catholic Church transcending individual sponsoring organizations and determined a non-congregational sponsorship model would strengthen the ministry. In 2011 the Vatican approved creation of a non-congregational public juridic person (PJP) to serve as the sole Sponsor of Ascension Health, which transitioned to become the Sponsor of Ascension, the new parent organization created in 2012.

Today, approximately 150,000 Ascension associates and 35,000 aligned providers serve in 1,900 sites of care – including 129 hospitals and more than 30 senior care facilities – in 24 states and the District of Columbia. As the largest non-profit health system in the U.S. and the world’s largest Catholic health system, Ascension is committed to delivering compassionate, personalized care to all persons with special attention to those in poverty and struggling the most.
