Reflection
I will put enmity between you and the woman and between your offspring and hers. He will strike at your head, while you strike at his heal…to the woman…in pain you will bring forth children…and your husband will be your master…The man called his wife Eve and she became the mother of all the living. Gen. 3:15, 16b, 20
There is a picture of Eve and Mary by Sr. Grace Remington, OCSO where Mary, pregnant with Jesus, has taken Eve’s hand in hers and touches her womb, connecting Eve with her savior. Down through the ages, Eve has been blamed for the evils in this world, as if she alone caused it all. According to Scripture, Eve’s sin affected all girl children, destining them to be subjected to a place of subordination.
But Mary, the Immaculate One, the new Eve, has touched all women with truth. We are all made in God’s image, male and female – partners, and with the Redemption of Christ, this heritage has been restored. Eve and Mary are both our mothers. We are their children, members of the Body of Christ, no longer male or female, slave or free. We have been touched by Mary’s hand and it is time we claim that heritage for all women and men, so that all can be free.
Prayer
Mary, our Mother, help us to truly believe in the redemptive power of your son and to live as a true member of Christ’s body. Help us to understand the Gospel message and to do what we can to restore justice and healing to our broken world.
Personal Challenge
Lovingly remind someone of their beautiful heritage, restored through the redemptive love of Jesus Christ. See all people as sacred, made in God’s image.
