Immigration

The Congregation of St. Joseph is dedicated to love of every neighbor without distinction. We believe we are all one human family, and we work to ensure that all people are treated with respect and dignity. We believe it is our responsibility to welcome those who seek protection and/or a better life for themselves and their families through immigration, and to provide safe asylum for those seeking refuge.

Funding and Supporting Ministry Work

Many of our sponsored ministries and individual sister ministries help those facing immigration in our world. Examples include Taller de Jose, a member of our mission network in Chicago that offers companionship and personal attention to people who have difficulty finding their way in a complex social system, and Bethany House of Hospitality, which offers housing and support services to young immigrant women as they journey to independence and which several of our sisters volunteer with.

Regular Immersion

The congregation supports sisters, associates, and staff who desire to travel for service immersion trips to the US/Mexico border. These trips allow individuals to assist with a variety of needed tasks such as assisting with childcare, making food, and distributing donations, while also having regular conversation with the individuals most affected by immigration issues. These meaningful encounters deepen our understanding and commitment to our siblings who are facing immigration.

Systemic Change

Our sisters and associates advocate for systemic change of policies and laws which seek to exclude or marginalize the dear neighbor wherever they may be. We stand with and for immigrants, refugees, and migrants by seeking to educate and raise awareness of the injustices regularly experienced by these at-risk populations. We are also members of and support organizations such as LCWR (Leadership Conference of Women Religious), and the Federation of Sisters of St. Joseph, which seek just immigration reform and defend DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals).
